Lallans is a variant of 'lowlands', is a name for lowland Scots, and is a dialect of mostly English. Lallans is not a language.

Lallans is purest when encountered in monoglot (one tongue) farming circles, where it is sustained and spoken regardless of social contact (near cities the education establishment actively discourages the Scots dialect, and the upwardly-mobile are bi-lingual by necessity to improve career prospects).

Here are a few words by way of example:-

Ain (own), anither (another), amang (among), ahint (behind), champ (mash potatoes), erse (backside), oxter (armpit), scallion (spring onion), telt (told).

NB  'Scots' is recognised under European law as a language rather than a dialect, and The Scottish Executive recognises the Scots language as a part of Scotland's linguistic and cultural heritage and advocates the inclusion of Scots in the school curriculum.
