EDUCATION and CAREER

Eur Ing David Ayre, Baron of Kilmarnock, is a retired Chartered Electrical Engineer.

He is a former pupil of Annadale Grammar School and he served an apprenticeship as a radio & TV technician with Perdio Limited in London and Sunderland. David has four University degrees including BA, BSc and BSc (Hons), in Engineering Design, Computing, and Electronics. He was awarded the post-graduate Diploma in Management Studies (DMS) at Newcastle Polytechnic - now the University of Northumbria at Newcastle.

Upon completion of an approved electronics project at BSc (Hons) level he became a Chartered Electrical Engineer and in the same year became a registered CEng. The pre-nominal Eur Ing (Européen Ingénieur) confirms his professional status as a Chartered Engineer throughout the European Economic Community (EEC). It was conferred from Brussels by FEANI.

GENEALOGY

David Ayre is an Ulster-Scot and the eldest of three brothers, the children of George Ayre and Eleanor Gordon Hindman.

His father and his paternal forebears hail from Randalstown, Co.Antrim. The family name was registered with the Scottish 'Ayr ' spelling, as shown below and explained on the AYRE page.

His mother, Eleanor Gordon Hindman and his maternal grandfather William Hindman hail from the 'Iron Burgh' of Coatbridge, Scotland. William Hindman was a Sergeant in the Black Watch.

HERALDRY AND THE BARONAGE

Heraldry serves to identify. The charges often indicate one's pedigree and one's career choice, and perhaps the values and beliefs that define the bearer.  It puts down roots for all those who follow, and provides a factual reference to some 'virtuous and well deserving' individual.

The petition from Eur Ing David Ayre to the Lord Lyon, King of Arms for his Grant of Arms was recorded in Oct. 2002, commencing a process which would take two years. On 18 Dec. 2002 he acquired the lands, Lordship & Barony of Kilmarnock, formerly owned by Lords de Walden. When the Superiority was disponed the Lord Lyon agreed to design David's Arms to include a reference to the Lordship & Barony of Kilmarnock (on ARMS page) for all time, whereupon his family armorial and baronial heritage commenced.

'Baron of Kilmarnock' is a feudal title and is a territorial dignity, whereas 'Baron Kilmarnock' is
a peerage title and a personal dignity. Furth of Scotland the difference is often misunderstood.

It was confirmed that David is 'the first of the Ayre name in Scotland' to be granted Armorials.

He is a Board Member of the Society of Scottish Armigers, and was elected Honorary Fellow of the Collegium Heraldicum Russiae (CHR) in 2004 for his services to the College.

INTERESTS

David's main interests are his family and friends, music, computing, fly-fishing, the Baronage

He started in computing with a 'Video Genie' (a Tandy TRS-80 copy) in 1979, and in 1980 he operated the 'Forum-80 Orkney' Bulletin Board from home. Since then he specialised in APL programming, JavaScript, Python, and Excel/VBA, but concentrates now on website design.

His film/ video taste is usually escapism, preferring gothic, diabolical, sci-fi, French passion, and series such as The Crow, Saw, Farscape, LEXX, Praying Mantis, and the rediscovery of forgotten times on YouTube. On TV he has little time for football, politics, romance, comedy, and war; detests soap operas, but regularly enjoys exploration, travel, wildlife - and Taggart!
